There is a sale on berries this week so I stocked up on some of my favorites. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. I really can't think of a better treat to chase away the winter blues. I love to mix them with yogurt like this brand of Skyr Icelandic Provisions yogurt. I like it because it's low in sugar, high in protein. I also don't like fat-free so this is also not fat free. I love all the flavors I have tried. I especially like the vanilla with real specks of vanilla bean and plain. Without a lot of sugar some plain yogurt is very sour. But these are more mild. (I am not paid to promote these. I just...
Winter solstice has come and gone so I am so looking forward to longer days again! Right now the sun goes down and it is dark in Chicago by just after 4:30 pm!
So how do I handle the cold dark days? Lots of chocolate for one.
Night Sledding.
And more snacks like tortilla chips, vegetables, and guacamole. Lemon ginger kombucha too. How are you enjoying the end of the year?
Today was the last day of our summer Farmer's Market with farmers from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan. Also, French nuns residing in Chicago who sell their pastries and breads. I really can't think of much better than local grown foods, and seeing foods in their more natural states, like these brussel sprouts. My mother said when she was young, grocers always sold brussels sprouts this way and bananas on the stalk, just like I saw them selling bananas in Costa Rica recently. Anyway, I really like getting out and talking to the producers and getting fresh high quality foods. They often inspired some of my paintings. You may have seen some of my farmer's market finds in a...
I found this super nutritious and delicious dish. Being the middle of summer, I am trying to eat healthier food and this recipe is both. I found it on Youtube by someone I follow who is all about healthy eating. Markus and Kara. They have some great videos on healthy eating. And everything I've tried tastes so good.
Kara garnishes the dish with some pomegranate seeds. There are no fresh pomegranates in my local grocery this time of year. But I found some in the freezer section. Score!
I also spiraled the sweet potato. Then I chop it a bit because otherwise the strands are super long.
Nasturtium flowers are easy to grow here in the Midwest, USA. They really are effortless, provide nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, and both leaves and flowers are edible. I find there is no need to spray them either, so they are totally organic and pesticide free.
Here are a couple ideas. The first is just as a garnish for almost anything. Here with vanilla ice cream. I've also put them on cakes, salads, and omelettes.
Here is a video of me making the top dish of Nasturtium Dolmas found on the On Vegetables cook book by Jeremy Fox.
